Hermaphroditism is a very nifty trait for a plant to have. Under less than ideal conditions, and typically when a female plant is not being pollinated, she will start to develop male flowers in order to preserve her lineage in seed. In very rare cases males can do the same by producing pistils long after they have dropped pollen in mass. It is in this way that cannabis seed producers can create feminized seed. This spectrum of expression depends on time as well. As we have observed in several cases that feminized seed stored for longer than 5 years has a much higher percentage of expressing male. Again an interesting adaptation to preserving its own heritage.
